One of the most common questions that I get inside our community is, where do I find time to work on my side hustle, to work on this passion project that I have, to work on my business, when I have these other things I’m doing? I have a job, or I have three kids three and under. I’m busy. When am I supposed to find time to do this?
As busy moms, it can feel overwhelming to get all the things done in a small 24-hour window and still find time to play with the kids, spend quality time with the husband, sleep, eat a well-balanced diet, and accomplish all those work tasks that need to get done. Where do the hours go? How is it possible to be able to be productive while trying to do all the things? The hours seem to go by so fast and then you look back and wonder what actually got accomplished.
This one simple thing can change the trajectory of your day and help you to start checking off those work tasks before the day even has a chance to get away from you. Waking up and starting your day with a power hour is just that…Powerful!
Maximize your productivity with a power hour
So many things to do and so little time in the day. When I have to tackle all the things, work, home, kids, time with my husband, and everything else, using the power hour solution helps me to get those remedial tasks complete before all the distractions of the day begin. It helps to increase my productivity as a mom and a business owner. The key is to get from bed to brain on as quickly as possible.
Design your morning to make it work
When you sit down to work, think through what will actually be productive for you. If you aren’t able to think through detailed things early in the morning, make a list of things that will not take as much brain power. The key is to work on something that will boost your productivity and get as much as possible out of that hour.
Think through what it is that you need in order to get your brain switched on in the morning and how long you need to do that.
Do you need scripture or meditation to start your day?
Do you need that exercise to get your endorphins flowing?
Or do you just need a cup of coffee or tea and then you can sit right down and have your brain switch to productive mode?
Whatever it is, add in that buffer time before the power hour starts.
If you want your power hour to start at 5 a.m., but you are slow to get started in the morning, add in a 15-minute buffer and set the alarm so that you can be ready. Then make sure your brain is functioning and be at your workstation by 5 a.m.
Get out of bed and get at it
Wake up and do your short morning routine and whatever it is you need to do to get your brain switched to productive mode, then jump into that power hour before the rest of your day starts.
Start with a brain dump
Start the week out with a brain dump and blow through the priority tasks during the power hour. You can operate out of a weekly brain dump until you find the needed consistency in your business and form a more structured system for those power hours. Just start with something and go from there.
Anytime you are creating a new system for yourself or changing it up to boost productivity in your home and business, it can feel overwhelming to start. Don’t shortchange yourself because it feels too big to start. Just start with something. Anything.
“When I have to tackle all the things, work, home, kids, time with my husband, and everything else, using the power hour solution helps me to get those remedial tasks complete before all the distractions of the day begin.”
Advance to more complex tasks
After a couple of weeks of focusing on creating the routine of getting up before your family (and the sun), you will find that you will be able to do more than just the top few items from your brain dump. The backlog of remedial tasks will shrink and your body and brain will adjust to being alert. Then you can begin to take on tasks that have a bigger impact on moving the needle on your goals.
Once you have completed these things and are working on complex tasks regularly you can look at creating a workflow for your business to maximize your power hour.
