November 1, 2024

Productivity

Ready for fewer meltdowns, more memory-making, and a whole lot less scrambling before you hit the road? A grab-and-go garage system can make that dream a reality!

In this post, we’ll walk through a simple, action-packed process inspired by ChelsiJo’s Systemize Your Life podcast that helps you streamline your garage so it’s functional, organized, and ready to make outdoor family adventures way easier. Let’s dive into the steps, gear recommendations, and smart little tricks that’ll have you organized and prepped for anything!

Garage System Step 1: Declutter and Sort Your Garage Like a Pro

First up, we’re starting with a BIG declutter. You want the grab-and-go system to be focused on exactly what you need for family adventures, so we’re narrowing it down to the essentials. Remember, less is more in this case, especially when you want to just grab and go!

Decluttering Tips:

  • Go Category by Category: Start with your beach stuff, then camping, then sports gear. Don’t overwhelm yourself by tackling the whole garage at once.
  • Use “In or Out” Bins: One bin for stuff that stays in the garage and another for things that need a new home (whether that’s the trash, donation pile, or somewhere else in the house).

Once you’re down to the bare bones, it’s time to make those categories official with specific zones.

It's about setting up a garage system that works for you, so you can focus on making memories, not messes.

Garage System Step 2: Set Up Specific Garage Zones

Think of your garage like a department store for adventure. Each “department” has its own type of gear, so everyone in the family knows exactly where to find things.

Essential Zones to Set Up:

  • Camping: Tents, tarps, and sleeping bags get their own spot.
  • Sports Gear: Basketballs, helmets, and all the bikes line up here.
  • Beach Gear: Think towels, beach chairs, and even that sand bucket your kids love.
  • Emergency Supplies: A small space for quick-grab necessities like first-aid kits, flashlights, or bug spray.

Keep similar items grouped together, and try labeling bins or shelves to help family members (including the kiddos) know what goes where. Check out our blog on Zone Cleaning for more tips on organizing by zones.

Garage System Step 3: Go Vertical With Wall Storage

Wall storage will change your life when it comes to keeping the garage clutter-free! Use every bit of vertical space to keep essentials off the ground but within arm’s reach.

Storage Solutions:

  • Hooks and Pegboards: Hang up items like helmets, small bags, and collapsible chairs.
  • Magnetic Strips: These are handy for metal tools you want quick access to, like bike repair tools.
  • Shelf Bins: Add bins to shelves for things like sunscreen, hand sanitizer, or sunglasses – items you always forget but never want to be without.

By going vertical, you create more floor space for things like bikes or scooters, and it’s way easier to spot exactly what you need.

Garage System Step 4: Use Portable Storage Bins

Here’s where we get to the “grab-and-go” magic. Add portable bins for your key activities! This is where you pre-pack specific bins or totes with items you always need for each adventure type.

Suggested Grab-and-Go Bins:

  1. Beach Bin – Towels, sunscreen, hats, and maybe even a little sand-friendly snack stash.
  2. Camping Bin – Flashlights, fire starters, and cooking basics like s’mores kits.
  3. Sports Bin – Water bottles, sweatbands, and mini first-aid supplies for on-the-field injuries.

Keep the bins light and pack only what you know you’ll need for that activity. And remember to restock each bin after a trip to make your next outing even easier.

Garage System Step 5: Implement a Restock Routine

What’s the secret to keeping your grab-and-go system going strong? A restock routine! Set a weekly reminder to go through each bin or zone and make sure things are clean, in good shape, and ready for your next adventure.

Restock Checklist:

  • Replace Used Items: Refuel your first-aid kits, snacks, and anything that was used up last time.
  • Check for Wear: Inspect items for damage, like deflated balls, torn bags, or batteries in flashlights.
  • Reorganize and Tidy Up: Return anything that’s wandered into the wrong zone to its rightful place.

What if we’re always losing small items like sunscreen and water bottles?

Try adding a small “essentials basket” near the garage door or in the car. This spot can be home to quick-grab items that need regular restocking, so they’re always on hand.

How do I make sure my kids help with keeping this system up?

Create zones they can manage themselves. Label each area and make it easy for them to grab and return items. Start small, like having them restock the sports bin after practice or games.
