Holiday Reset : How To Organize Your Home And Schedule

How to Organize Your Home After the Holidays chelsijo

January 15, 2025

Productivity

The holidays are over, and the new year is just here. How do you organize your home and schedule to get back on track? I’m currently in hardcore vacation mode still, so I get it! That is exactly what I want to talk to you about today: How to get back into a rhythm that feels good.

You may be ready to charge ahead and tackle every day starting on January 1st, or you may need a slower pace to ease into everything. Either way, I’ve got you covered because today we will discuss recharging and reorganizing your space and schedule, and how we can make them work together. They can coincide with each other no matter what your pace is.

Listen Below For The Entire Episode On The Systemize Your Life Podcast

If you want to charge forward with a “full steam ahead” approach, or if you would rather approach the new year more gently, I can show you how to reset your space and your schedule with ease, but absolute efficiency.

If you’re new around here, I’m Chelsea Jo and I teach moms how to create systems that bring peace and productivity into their homes and business. Today I will tell you how to reset your life after the holidays in a way that matches your energy no matter where your energy’s at right now and sets you up for success. I am in the same boat as you, trying to balance my home and business, as always. I hope to give you some really good insights on how I am juggling both things. And you can too in the New Year.

Let’s jump right into the first topic that I want to cover with you, which is, discovering what your pace is.

What Is Your Pace in Organizing Your Home and Schedule?

You might be feeling super energized and ready to take on the world or you might not. You might be feeling the holiday exhaustion and a gentler start to things. Do you know which one you are? Are you somewhere in the middle on any given day?

Let’s talk about how to blend both approaches. Right now I’m feeling tired, but not in a bad way. I just feel like I want to snuggle, sleep in, and relax with my family. There are still suitcases that need to be unpacked and laundry still needs to be done. We’re going to go hard soon, but I want another day or two to take it slow. Kids go back to school soon and I want to soak them up and that is 100% Okay.

Recharge and Reorganize: Let the Little Things Give You Energy.

Now we want to blend recharging and organizing together. Let’s begin to reorganize by doing a little bit of planning and tidying up, or if you want to jump all in, you can purge and organize. However, you may just need to start small, get your thoughts together, and look at what you WANT your schedule to look like in the new year.

I think these two things go hand in hand and it doesn’t have to be black and white, or all or nothing. We don’t need to look at all the people posting all their goals and doing all the things and feel like we have to show up in the same capacity. It is okay to show up in a doable way for you, and you only.  But in this season, I want to remind you that letting some of the little things go is okay. You can let the laundry sit, or not unpack the suitcase right away. It’s OK! It will all get done eventually.  And if you have a home management system in place and your business is organized, you can pick back up very easily when the time comes.

How to Organize Your Home and Schedule With A Home Management System

Now I am assuming that you’re reading this because you probably don’t have a home management system that works efficiently. And maybe your business isn’t organized the way that you wish it were. Perhaps that is causing you to feel a little stressed and caving to the pressure. But let’s be honest, it is okay to feel that pressure sometimes too.

I truly believe that this is what the journey of balancing home and business is all about. If you want to grow, being excited and trying to learn is okay. If you are tired of trying to do the same things, the same way without ever feeling like it is working, why not try something new? When you do these two things together and learn what it looks like, you can better create balance. And that is what we all want, isn’t it? If you want to check out some of my systems for keeping up with your house, head on over to Systemize Your Life and take a look around.

I want you to remember that every day does not have to look the same. The important thing is to learn how to replenish your energy while building momentum. Balance is in the big picture or the weekly picture; not just the daily to-do list. Once you can learn to balance by the week, instead of the day, you will become much more efficient in juggling your work life with your home life and even better, blending the two to complement each other.

How to Organize Your Home: Two Different Paces

Pace 1: How to Organize Your Home With the ”Charge Ahead” Approach

Let’s dive into some actionable steps now! We are talking to those who want to charge full steam ahead, and get this thing going! If you feel full of energy and are ready to go hard to get your house and schedule back in order, I am talking to you.

Step 1: Declutter and Deep Clean All Your Main Spaces.

This doesn’t have to be all the nooks and crannies, spring-cleaning type of deep clean, but let’s get our trash bags and donation boxes ready. Getting all that extra stuff out of your house immediately is incredibly important. Doing this will allow you to get all those little things back in their places, and all the new Christmas presents to be put away.

I want you to remember to keep your home a point of focus as you begin to work on your new goals and growth for the New Year. So if you have energy to spare and can’t wait to move ahead, getting the decluttering and deep cleaning down now is a must. It will make you feel Amazing!

Step 2: Map Out Your Time Blocks

Next, let’s map out those time blocks and make any adjustments where your home management system is lacking. I’m talking about time blocks, routines, and anything that feels hard. Write it down, and circle it. This step is more important than you think, do not skip it.

Step 3: Figure Out What Your Goals are for Organizing Your Home and Schedule

Now I want you to sit down and hash out what business goals you have for the new year. If this is a struggle, I teach all these things and more in my 12-month group coaching program, Systemized to Scale.

Pace 2: How to Organize Your Home and Schedule With an “Ease In” Approach

Okay, now for those of you who want to just ease in. Are you still in the mood to stay comfy with your cup of coffee or hot coco? If this is you, I want you to start small and gently when organizing your home and your schedule.

Step 1: Start Small and Reset Just 1 High-Traffic Area

If you are not in the mood to clean out the fridge, pantry, or drawers, that’s fine! Just start with the corner of the counter or the kitchen island. You could focus on the mudroom or even your closet. Just pick an area, and tackle it. You will feel so much better tackling just that one little space.  Can you just tidy one place? Anywhere you choose, is a great place to start. Even small goals are goals, and they will set you off in the right direction for the new year. Small steps are doable.

Step 2: Block Off Time to Reflect on How You Want to Organize Your Home and Schedule.

Now I want you to block off time, on your schedule, to simply reflect on what you want your schedule to look like. This practice is hugely beneficial for everyone and anyone. However, if you are feeling a bit lost or uncertain as to what your goals actually are, or how hard you want to push, this practice can provide great clarity. Take this time to just dream a bit about how you would organize your home and your schedule. Write down those goals you have been playing with in the back of your mind, and then decide what your ideal is.

“Even small goals are goals, and they will set you off in the right direction for the new year. Small steps are doable.”

Step 3: Practice Gentle Routines – Focus On the Little Things

Once you have settled on an ideal schedule, I want you to start practicing some very gentle routines. For example, let’s look at a morning routine. I want you to write down what you would love for your morning routine to look like, but instead of diving right in, just practice the first step of that ideal routine. Allow yourself to just take it slow, and allow it to build. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing here either. You are not trying to create some extremely rigid routine with no wiggle room. Remember, this is your life and you are the only one who has to live it every day. Enjoy the process and your pace.

I want you to permit yourself to do only the small things you feel able to do. It will be fine if not all the laundry is finished and put away this weekend. But are you able to do one load? Eventually, you will find your rhythm, and it will all get done but you have to take some of the pressure off of yourself. If you allow that pressure to constantly build, eventually it will crush you, and cause you to fall further and further behind. When that entire to-do list is not within your capacity, just pick one or two things to complete, and then allow yourself the space to fill your cup with what it feels most important today.

Begin To Practice Balancing Progress With Rest As You Organize Your Home And Schedule

Okay, let’s talk about balancing progress with rest in how we organize our home and our schedule. Not everything must be completed in one day. That is a clear recipe for overwhelm. Instead let’s look at creating rhythms that feel good, and refresh you in return. Give yourself the grace to change things that are not working, because let’s be honest, circumstances will not remain constant. Something will happen in one month, or three, and life will require us to shift.

Hold Yourself Accountable For What You Have The Capacity For Today!

We are not promised tomorrow, nor do we know what tomorrow will hold when it comes, so we must live for today. This fact allows us to do what feels right for that day, and only live within our capacity. Be true to yourself today! So if that means that today, you only have the capacity and energy to tidy up a bit or dream a little, or you feel a nudge to relax today, do it! But taking care of what you truly feel you have the capacity for today, is amazing because it will set you up for success tomorrow.

No matter what your pace is right now or where your pace is in a week or two, or even a month from now, it is possible for recharging and reorganizing to work together. So I permit you, in fact, I emphatically encourage you, to refocus on setting your pace to your capacity, revisit your routines, and take one step at a time to create a solid strong foundation for the year ahead.

Focus on Your Progress, not your Speed.

Speed is not the goal, progress is. Slow and steady can win this race if you remain true to yourself. Others may fly past you in their progress, and others may lag behind. It is not a competition. Stay true to yourself, and celebrate others in their race.  It’s okay to change whatever it is that you thought you were going to do whenever you arrive at the place where you thought you were going to be. Remember, it is an honor to do the work that you are doing, so make space for it, and reevaluate what is important for you to carry into the new year. Only you can truly answer this question.

Adding in time to recharge and organize can be a beautiful blend that sets you up for success. A planner without time stamps works best for Time Blocking because it allows you to be flexible while still creating structure.
