Start With One Small Space
I know when there is just so much clutter surrounding you it is hard to see those little spots you can tackle really quickly. You will be scrolling Facebook, Instagram, or checking emails for 5 minutes at least ten times today so there absolutely are teeny tiny pockets of time in your day that you could be using. Just put that darn phone down.
It’s ok to do one small space at a time. You can do one drawer in your kitchen without doing the WHOLE kitchen. You can do one spot in your office even if there are papers everywhere, it’s ok. I would encourage you to not make it all or nothing. You are not going to become the person you want to be by just being her. You have to become her and the only way to become something is it do it, and you can’t do it all at once. Stop the chatter in your brain that tells you you can’t do it all, because no you can’t. It starts with one choice and implementing one action from one post, one at a time, and doing that over and over again.
Today we are starting really small, with a simple declutter list of 15 simple places inside your house you can declutter in less than 5 minutes. These are spaces where the clutter piles up. When the clutter piles up it causes us to be more overwhelmed and less organized and it consumes our time and creates mental clutter.
You can dive into our other resources if you are overwhelmed by the idea of decluttering and getting rid of stuff. But with any of these spaces please just detach yourself from anything you haven’t used in the last 6-12 months. The results you get from throwing away a few things will be amazing. Alright grab that pen and paper and let’s dive in.
“You are not going to become the person you want to be by just being her. You have to become her and the only way to become something is it do it, and you can’t do it all at once.”
1. Makeup Drawer/Bag
How long have you had those brushes and blush? How many tubes of mascara do you have? Get rid of them.
2. Towels
I will never understand why people have so many towels. I recommend only 2 towels per person in your home. Get rid of those bleach-stained ones. You don’t need to save anymore to cut up into rags. I’m giving you permission to throw them away now.
3. Silverware Drawer
Go tackle that, get it done and over with. I’m sure there are enough crumbs in there to feed a small family of birds. Take it out, rinse it out and organize that tray, put back the ones that you use. If you have chopsticks, straws, and rubber bands in your utensil drawer, just start getting rid of them. You shouldn’t have so may in the drawer that they can’t all be washed in the dishwasher at the same time. The more you have of these things the longer you wait to wash them again and that is where the cycle occurs with all the dishes, all the laundry, all the water bottles and you still can’t find what you need.
4. Mail Basket
5. Sock/Underwear Drawer
Like how many sports bras do you need? Or like your underwear, how many years has it been since you’ve bought new underwear? That pink sock is never going to find it’s mate, just get rid of it, you do not need it. You don’t even need to donate this stuff, you have my permission, just throw it away.
6. Purses
I’m not even talking about what is in your purse, that is coming later, I mean your bucket of purses, your bag full of bags. I know you probably spent a lot of money on these but you don’t need them. I’m a bag hoarder. I know what purse I’ll be getting rid of right after this, it’s a red one. I’ll post it in our Facebook group. That’s where I want you to come and share with me what you’re getting rid of too!
7. Shower Caddy
Go into your shower right now. How many nearly empty shampoo bottles do you have? I don’t want to know how many razors you have or loofas full of slime. It’s ok if there is a tablespoon of shampoo left in there, just throw it out.
8. Kids’ Bath Toys
There are so many of these. The time it takes to pick up all those bath toys is really time-consuming. Your kids may think they need all of them but they really don’t. There is so much more connection and play when you don’t have so many of them.
9. Nightstand
This one is super straightforward. Pick a drawer or do the whole thing.
10. Supplements/Medicine Cabinet
Go look at some expiration dates. Can you start combining the three open bottles of Tylenol? Open it up, pull things out, throw some things out, clean it up, and put it back by grouping like items together. That will make it feel so much more refreshing for you.
11. Jewelry
This one is really hard for me. I have been putting it off for a long time. I’ve pared down so much since when I was younger. I have the same go-tos that I wear all the time and have so many that I never wear. Do you have rings in there that turn your fingers green that you know you’re not going to wear? Get rid of those things you know you never going to wear.
12. Condiment Shelf
You don’t have to do your whole fridge, that might be a nightmare, but start with one shelf or one door. Or maybe it’s just one section of your pantry. The condiment shelf is just a really quick way to get some incredible relief because half of those things are crusty, moldy, and expired. Get in there and throw some of those things away.
13. Junk Drawer
This is my number one pet peeve. Like WHY do you have a junk drawer? It just does not make sense to me. Everything should have a place and a home. You can have a junk drawer but you should be able to open and close it and it should have a purpose that’s not for ‘junk.’ Ours has batteries, spare car keys, a roll of tape, and a pair of scissors, it’s more like a utility drawer. Get out those random pens and pencils and put them where they belong and get rid of those things you don’t need. If there are things that you really don’t know how to categorize they can stay in there.
14. Center Console in Your Car/Glove Box
You want to open this and know what is in there. It shouldn’t be a garbage can. Take a plastic bag with you next time you go to your car and do this while you’re in the pick-up line. Now onto the final thing on this simple declutter list.
15. Purse/Diaper Bag/Backpack
Pull all the things out, throw out the garbage, shake out the crumbs and get that thing decluttered. Neatly put back the things inside that you have to have so you can find them the next time you need them.
Now it’s Your Turn!
I hope you can go tackle two, three, if not four of these spaces right away on this simple declutter list. Take pictures and come share with me over inside the Facebook Group how neat and tidy these little mirco-spots in your house are after you’ve taken a few quick minutes to declutter them.
If you have questions on more of these please pop into the Facebook group and give us your questions. We have accountability over there. We want you to learn from these things, and really implement them in your life. You’ve got this! I hope to see you over there!
